As a child, Beverly would sing gospels in the church. He joined his first band when he was 13, and formed an acapella group called The Blenders, at 16. There, they struggled to get shows until they got to meet Marvin Gaye, who gave Beverly and his band the much-needed financial backing and also introduced them to his contacts in the music industry.
