History of Sneak A Kiss Day

Kissing may seem like a standard form of affection nowadays, but the tradition of kissing is not always as we know it. Kissing has a unique history, and evidence of kissing has been found in India’s Vedic Sanskrit texts over 3,500 years old. In these texts, kissing is described as a practice where humans rub and press their noses together. But, on the contrary, some researchers believe the act of kissing goes back further and may have existed for millions of years. This is because animals chew food and feed them to the young. It is from this practice that humans picked up and formulated into ‘kissing.’

However, an accurate reference to a kiss is clearly defined in the “Mahabharata,” which spoke about setting one’s mouth upon the other. Another reference emerged in the “Kama Sutra” during the 5th century A.D. In the book, there were several descriptions of kissing techniques. From 326 B.C., kissing began spreading from India due to conquerors that invaded the land from other parts of the world. In the Middle Ages, kissing the hands of the elite of that time became common. But due to the devastating plague that spread, King Henry VI of England banned kissing in 1439 to curb the spread of infection. However, a kiss on the cheek remained a popular greeting in France.

Other forms of kissing emerged with time, including the famous “French Kiss.” According to Sheril Kirshenbaum, author of “The Science of Kissing,” the French may not have created the art of kissing with the tongue. But the practice became common in the 1920s when American travelers in France started romantic relations with French women.
