Usually, on this day, people eat apples, apple pies, or other dishes with apples, even if they are not Orthodox.

History of Saviours of the Apple Feast Day

Three Saviors, or Spas, are celebrated in Russia: Honey, Apple, and Nut. Savior of the Apple Feast Day is on August 19. August 19 is considered by Orthodox Christians as the day of earthly gifts. Traditionally on this day, people celebrate the harvest festival. It was believed that, on this day, the season begins to change, and autumn comes. The nights after Apple Spas become colder. There is even a Russian saying: “Apple Savior — summer is gone from us.”

According to the Christian calendar, the holiday is called the Transfiguration of Jesus. It is one of the 12 major Orthodox holidays. It is based on the events of the Gospel story. It was on this day that the three apostles of Christ saw him in his divine majesty, which strengthened their faith. On this day, the fruits of the new harvest, honey, and grain ears were blessed in churches. The blessed ears and seeds were kept until the next sowing.

The Eastern Slavs had a belief that, in the next world, the children whose parents did not eat apples on this day would receive gifts (among them were paradise apples), but not the children whose parents did.
