Battle of Vertières Day marks November 18, 1803, when the Haitian Revolutionary Army decisively defeated Napoleon’s expeditionary force at the Battle of Vertières — the final major battle of the Haitian Revolution, after which Haiti declared independence on January 1, 1804, becoming the world’s first Black republic.
