Lash Stylist Day Hero

Shu Uemura

While not a lash stylist himself, Japanese makeup artist Shu Uemura (1928–2007) is widely credited with popularizing false eyelashes in the Western world during the 1960s. His innovative approach to beauty and his iconic cosmetic lines, including a focus on eye makeup, significantly influenced the development and acceptance of lash enhancements as a mainstream beauty product, paving the way for modern lash artistry.

History of Lash Stylist Day

In 1879, James McCabe wrote a piece of work titled “The National Encyclopedia of Business and Social Forms,” in which he stated that eyelashes could be lengthened by cutting the ends with scissors. Other beauty books, such as “My Lady’s Dressing Room” (1892) by Baronne Staff and “Beauty’s Aids on How to be Beautiful” (1901) by Countess C., also made mention of the fact that the trimming of eyelashes, among other things, could benefit eyelash growth. Countess C. also suggested that eyelashes could be given extra length and strength by a regular wash with a mixture of water and walnut leaves.

In 1882, Henry Labouchère of “Truth” reported that women in Paris had found a way to cut and make false eyelashes by having hair sewn into the eyelids. A similar report appeared in an 1899 edition of “The Dundee Courier” where a description of the painful method for elongating the lashes was given. The article explained how the procedure achieved longer lashes by having hair from the head sewn into the eyelids.

In 1902, German-born hair specialist and noted inventor Charles Nessler patented “A New or Improved Method of and Means for the Manufacture of Artificial Eyebrows, Eyelashes and the Like” in the United Kingdom, and by 1903, he began to sell artificial eyelashes at his London salon located on Great Castle Street. He used the profits from these sales to fund his next invention, which was the permanent wave machine. A permanent wave machine is commonly called a perm and involves the use of heat and/or chemicals to break and reform the cross-linking bonds of the hair structure.

Lash Stylist Day FAQs

When is Lash Stylist Day?

Lash Stylist Day 2026 falls on Thursday, September 24, offering a perfect mid-week opportunity to acknowledge the skilled professionals who enhance our beauty.

How many lash stylists are there in the U.S.?

The beauty industry continues to see significant growth in specialized roles. While exact numbers fluctuate, the U.S. is home to tens of thousands of licensed estheticians and cosmetologists, a substantial portion of whom specialize in or offer lash extension services.

What training is required to become a lash stylist?

To become a certified lash stylist in most U.S. states, individuals typically need to complete a cosmetology or esthetician program and obtain a state license. Many also pursue specialized certification courses in lash extension application techniques to master the craft.

What is the difference between classic and volume lash extensions?

Classic lash extensions involve applying one individual extension to one natural lash, creating a natural, mascara-like look. Volume lashes, on the other hand, use multiple lighter-weight extensions fanned out and applied to a single natural lash, resulting in a fuller, more dramatic effect.

Why We Love

  1. Natural lashes have finite length

Natural eyelashes have a certain length up to which they can grow and beyond which they will not grow, hence the use of extensions.

  2. Artificial lashes come in different styles

Cases of eyelash extensions usually come in a variety of sizes and styles.

  3. Natural eyelashes constantly grow and fall out

Natural eyelashes are always growing, much like other hairs on the body — and as they grow up to a certain point, they fall out.

  4. Eyelash extensions are mostly customized

Given the fact that each individual has a peculiar size of eyelashes, artificial eyelash extensions are best customized to specific sizes.

  5. Removal of artificial eyelashes requires professional help

It is rather impossible to take out an artificial eyelash by oneself — therefore, it is advisable to have a professional do it instead.

Why We Love Lash Stylist Day

  1. Eyelashes enhance facial beauty

Extended eyelashes have a significant impact on a person’s overall facial beauty. And women sure love their lashes!

  2. Extensions are beneficial to the natural lashes

Extensions actually help the natural lashes grow longer and healthier. This is one of the many reasons we love them!

  3. Lash Stylists help create better looks

Lash Stylists are individuals whose expertise is in helping people enhance their looks through beautiful eyelash extensions. What are you waiting for? Get yours done today!
