History of Bonaire Flag Day

To know about the history of Bonaire Flag Day, we must travel back in time. Bonaire island was initially populated by Arawak Indians, who came from nearby Venezuela. According to researchers, they have been living on Bonaire since 1000 A.D.

This changed in 1499 when the Spanish Empire claimed the island. Alonso de Ojeda and Amerigo Vespucci arrived in Bonaire and claimed the island on behalf of the Spanish Empire. For more than 100 years, the Spanish ruled the island. However, the Dutch took control of the island in 1636 by winning a war that lasted for 80 years, referred to as the ‘Time of Confusion.’

It was not only the Dutch who were fighting the Spaniards for control of the Bonaire Island. Other countries and individuals occupying the island were fighting for the same thing. After several years of confusion and commotion undergoing several different constitutional forms over the years, Bonaire finally reverted to its Dutch status in 1816.

The flag of Bonaire was developed in 1981. One of the notable creators of the Bonaire Flag was Whitney Smith, an American vexillologist. The flag consists of two triangles, separated by a diagonal white stripe on a rectangular base. The larger triangle is blue and is located in the lower right corner, while the smaller one is yellow and in the top left corner. The remaining area in the middle is white.

Inside the white strip, there is a black compass with a red six-pointed star. The compass is a symbol of Bonaire’s population. It represents that the island is inhabited by people who have come from the four corners of the world. The six points in the star refer to the original six villages founded on the island.

Bonaire Flag Day is celebrated on the traditional date when European explorers first arrived on the island.
