Background

Son Seung-wan, commonly known as Wendy, was born in Seoul, South Korea to parents whose names have not been disclosed to the public. She spent most of her formative years in Cheongju, South Korea before the family moved to the U.S. and then Canada where she completed her schooling in 2012.

Her parents signed her up for lessons in singing, saxophone, piano, flute, and guitar. She trained throughout her life from the age of 6. In 2006 she moved to live in the U.S. with her Sister Son Seung-hee. It was here that she permanently changed her name to Wendy Son. Wendy began learning English, French, and Spanish at the high school she attended called Richmond Hill High School. After graduating, Wendy moved back to South Korea to begin her career in the musical industry. She was picked from 5,000 videos in an online audition in 2010 for the “Koreaboo: Cube Entertainment Global Auditions 2011” where she continued to the final round in Vancouver, British Columbia. In 2019 Wendy suffered serious injuries and was admitted to hospital after an accident during rehearsals where she fell from the platform, fracturing her pelvis and wrist.

Wendy is the lead vocalist in the Korean pop girl group Red Velvet. The name has been unpacked and discussed, explaining how it is unique and for a reason. Songs like ‘Ice Cream Cake’ and ‘Dumb Dumb’ represent the bold and explorative side of the group, whereas songs like ‘Be Natural,’ ‘Automatic,’ and ‘One of These Nights’ represent the softness, toned down, and elegant side of the group. Wendy has released her own single and album called “Like Water”, streaming on Apple Music and Spotify.
