Oscar Gutiérrez, popularly known as Rey Mysterio, is a professional wrestler known for his popular high-flying ‘Lucha Libre’ style. He was born in Chula Vista, California, in the US. Little is known about his childhood life apart from the fact that he was trained by his uncle, Rey Misterio Sr., a top wrestling star of the 1970s. Gutiérrez made his wrestling debut when he was fourteen years of age. He wrestled under a variety of ring names, including “The Green Lizard,” and “Colibrí,” before he settled for “Rey Mysterio Jr.”
In 1995, Gutiérrez, signed with ‘Paul Heyman’s Extreme Championship Wrestling’ (ECW). He debuted in September of the same year, wrestling against Psicosis, another beginner. He wrestled with ECW for one more year until he signed with ‘World Championship Wrestling’ (WCW). On June 16, 1996, for his first match, Gutiérrez took on Dean Malenko, challenging him for the WCW Cruiserweight Championship. Despite losing the match, he continued appearing in numerous matches and won several titles until WCW was closed down.
In June 2002, Gutiérrez signed with ‘World Wrestling Entertainment’ (WWE), finally dropping the “Jr” from his name. He made his debut in an episode of “SmackDown!” wearing his iconic mask, against Chavo Guerrero. Gutiérrez became a regular competitor in WWE until his contract expired in 2015. On January 28, 2018, Gutiérrez made a one-night appearance at the “Royal Rumble.” It was later announced that Gutiérrez had signed a two-year contract with WWE.
