Claire Saffitz, born on September 16, 1986, is an American food writer, chef, and YouTube personality. Until mid-2020, Saffitz was a contributing editor for the “Bon Appétit” magazine and participated in several series on the “Bon Appétit” YouTube channel. Her best-known series was the “Gourmet Makes,” a series where she made gourmet versions of popular snack foods. Since leaving the company in 2020, she has published a book, became a best-selling author, and works as a video host on her own YouTube channel.
Claire Saffitz was born in St. Louis, Missouri, in an Ashkenazi Jewish family. Her great-grandfather immigrated to the U.S. from what was then Russia, and nowadays is Ukraine, in the early 1900s.
As a young child, Saffitz attended the Captain Elementary school in her area and in 2005 graduated from Clayton High School. After completing her basic schooling, she went on to attend Harvard University and graduated in 2009 with an A.B. in U.S. history and literature. She then continued to study French cuisine and pastry at the École Grégoir-Ferrandi in Paris, France. After a four-month internship at Spring Restaurant, Saffitz moved to Montreal, Québec, where, in 2013, she received her master’s degree with a focus on French culinary history in the early modern era at McGill University.
In 2013 Saffitz joined “Bon Appétit” magazine, starting as a recipe tester and working her way up to being a senior food editor until 2018. In August 2018 she left her full-time position at the magazine but returned in November as a freelance recipe developer and video host.
After permanently leaving in 2020, in October of that very same year, Saffitz debuts her cookbook “Dessert Person: Recipes and Guidance for Baking with Confidence,” published by Clarkson Potter. The book became a “New York Times” Best Seller, debuting in the second position. Currently, Saffitz has her own YouTube channel and lives happily with her husband in the Upper West Side neighborhood of New York City.
