History of Floral Design Day

The Floral Design Day was created with an idea to celebrate the wonderful art form of floral design and to honor the pioneer behind the growth and wide reach of floral arts in this world, Carl Rittner. The birthday of Rittner, February 28, 1914, is officially celebrated as the Floral Design Day in America every year.

The history of floral designs dates back to ancient Egypt, where the paintings, etchings, and carvings in tombs reveal bouquets made of lotus blossoms and buds. So, there is no doubt that humans have been involved in this art form from ancient days.

The rapid reach of floral designs started when Rittner gained interest in floral arts. He attended Boston University, where he received his Master’s degree in Education. To spread this art worldwide, he started Rittner’s School of Floral Design in 1947. In 1995, the Governor of Massachusetts, William F. Weld, proclaimed February 28 as Floral Design Day.

From its opening until today, his school is teaching the many shapes and forms of floral designs to students across the world. They specialize in teaching floral designing and it is licensed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Today, floral design has grown as a multibillion-dollar industry that includes floral arrangements for special events, bouquets for weddings and holidays, and many, and the contribution of Rittner is appreciated by many. Thus, this day is all about honoring and celebrating the art, beauty, and grace of floral arrangements and those involved in developing this unique art form.
