History of Power Rangers Day
The origins of Power Rangers can be traced back to the 1970s when Marvel Comics agreed to exchange ideas with a Japanese television production company, the Toei Company. It was at that time that the Japanese version of Spiderman was created. Three series of “Super Sentai” were also created around this time which gained immense popularity in Japan.
Power Rangers was created as an American counterpart to “Super Sentai.” The plot was modified a little to fit into the American television standards. The series “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” was created with five teens dressed up in colorful suits, fighting monsters and robots like Zord and Megazord, who were adopted from “Super Sentai.”
Briefly, the show was banned in New Zealand for being too violent for children. The “Power Rangers” was distributed by Saban Entertainment which was bought by the Walt Disney Company in 2001. The season “Power Rangers Jungle Fury” was released in 2008 and “Power Rangers R.P.M.” in 2009. Businessman Haim Saban, founder of Saban entertainment bought back the franchise from Disney in 2010.
On their 20th anniversary, Nickelodeon decided to air the season “Power Rangers Megaforce.” Toy and board game company, Hasbro proclaimed August 28 to be celebrated as National Power Rangers Day. To mark their 25th anniversary, “Power Rangers: The Ultimate Visual History,” a magazine describing all the Power Ranger seasons along with a list of toys was released by Inside Edition.
