Guyana Republic Day

Mashramani/Republic Day (Guyana) is celebrated on February 23 every year.  Commonly shortened to ‘Mash’, this day is one of the most important festivals in Guyana.

Guyana has a lot of ethnic communities, and for Mashramani/Republic Day, all the communities come together to celebrate. The celebrations involve many competitions, parades with fancy floats, costumes, band marches, and street dancing. Overall, the celebrations are some of the most vibrant national day celebrations in the world. The word Mashramani means ‘celebrations after cooperative work’ and is derived from Amerindian and Guyanese English. The celebrations reflect the cultural heritage of the nation and its various ethnic groups.

St. Lucia Independence Day

Saint Lucia Independence Day is celebrated annually on February 22 to commemorate the day when Saint Lucia gained its complete independence from the United Kingdom in 1979. First inhabited by the Arawaks and Caribs, Saint Lucia was colonized by the French and British in the 17th century. Previously called Iyanola by the Arawaks and later Hewanorra by the Caribs, Saint Lucia was also known as Helen of the West Indies due to being frequently switched between French and British control. It was then officially ceded to the British by the French in 1814.

Tex Avery’s full name is Frederick Bean Tex Avery, and he spearheaded the creative development of Warner Bros. and M.G.M. studios. He created iconic cartoons like “Looney Tunes” and “Gold Miner” and developed popular characters such as Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Elmer Fudd, Droopy, etc. He also played a major role in shifting from the normal Disney cartoon model and created fast-paced and innovative shows that featured surrealist humor, racial stereotypes, and intense humor.
