National Video Games Day 2018 – September 12

National Video Games Day is observed annually on Sept. 12. (Its cousin day, National Video Game Day, is celebrated on July 8 each year.) Video game players across the United States enjoy this day with much pride and enthusiasm. From their earliest days, video games have transformed into something more than just a 2D interactive experience – transcending use cases and becoming an industry on its own. National Video Games Day is a day to celebrate this new-ish pastime! So grab a friend, a couple of controllers, and sidle up to your favorite gaming console.

National Video Games Day Activities

1. Invite some friends over to your local arcade
The feel of those buttons under your palms and thumbs. The anxious anticipation of your upcoming turn, marked by inserting a quarter on the machine. The adrenaline surge of fighting off impossible odds to ensure that final quarter lasts as long as possible before your day of gaming was over. Nostalgia baby.

2. Buy a friend or loved one a game
Pay it forward with a gift that will have tons of replay value in the future.

3. Go retro
Bust out that old Nintendo 64 collecting dust in your storage container unit and power it up to enjoy some instant nostalgic gratification. Want to kick it real old school? Find an Atari!

Why We Love National Video Games Day

A. Happiness
Recent studies have shown that adults who play video games have higher levels of happiness, and in some cases relaxation, as a result of their gaming. Go forth merry gamers!

B. Games serve as a sense of accomplishment
Games make us feel great not just in a personal sense, but in a multiplayer sense. That feeling of taking down the final boss of the final level of the game with your best friends? Totally awesome, and totally priceless.

C. It’s an escape
Video games can serve as an escape from our sometimes boring and monotonous lives. Long day at work? Nothing like a fight against a big boss in Sonic the Hedgehog, a good old-fashioned Mario Kart race, or a dose of Minecraft world-building to wash your cares away.
