The president took note to mention that, 100 years ago, it took the average American four weeks to travel from San Francisco to New York. The concerned traveler would have to travel to Central America by ship, crossing the Isthmus on a mule wagon. However, developments in the transportation system cut the traveling time down to just 10 days.
