Kim So-jeong, popularly known as Sowon, became famous by being the leader and only rapper of the all-female K-Pop group, GFriend. The name Sowon means ‘wish’ and ‘hope’ in Korean. She trained for five years before assuming the role of leader at GFriend and before gaining prominence, she appeared in Rainbow’s music video for the song ‘To Me.’

Formed in January 2015, GFriend was a successful group for the time that they were active. They bagged several new artist awards such as the Best New Artist at the Seoul Music Awards and Best New Female Artist at the Melon Awards in 2015. They also received a nomination for Best Korean Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards in 2015 and 2016. The group was composed of Sowon (Leader, Rapper, Visual), Yerin (Lead Dancer, Vocalist, Center, Face of the Group), Eunha (Lead Vocalist), Yuju (Main Vocalist), SinB (Main Dancer, Vocalist, Center), and Umji (Vocalist, Maknae). The band’s debut extended play (E.P.) was titled “Season of Glass.” The lead track from this E.P. was ranked by YouTube at number nine on the 2015 list of the “10 Most Viewed K-Pop Videos Around the World.” They went on to release several more albums, go on tours, and appear in reality shows.

In July 2020, GFriend released its third studio album titled “Walpurgis Night.” The following year would be the last for the group to work together. All the members’ contracts with Source Music, their company, came to an end in May as it was time to wrap up after a successful six years. They pursued different solo interests, with Sowon going into acting under I.O.K. Company in August 2021.
