As a child, the star played several sports, including basketball, football, and ice hockey, but his father would not let him play ice hockey for safety reasons. In 2014, the young player was the biggest highlight of basketball and ended up drawing national attention. In 2018, James took the Old Trail School in Bath Township, Summit County, Ohio, where he graduated from high school with an Independent School League championship win.

The star competed with several Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) basketball teams before he was even in high school. At just nine years old, James played for the Miami City Ballers in a fourth-grade AAU tournament while being watched by head coach John Calipari (Kentucky Wildcats). In June, the star represented the same team in the Junior Midwest Championship. National Basketball Association (NBA) and advanced to the quarterfinals.

In August 2018, James enrolled at Crossroads School, a private elementary and high school in Santa Monica. California state rules prevented him from joining the varsity team because he was still in eighth grade.
