Background

Briston Maroney was born on January 24, 1998, in Knoxville, Tennessee, where he grew up and went to school. When he was 15, he auditioned for the 13th season of “American Idol,” performing the Rolling Stones’ ‘You Can’t Always Get What You Want.’ It didn’t take the judges or audiences long to realize that he was meant for something huge. Following his stint on the show, he started studying music at Lipscomb University, Tennessee. Maroney has mentioned that his musical influences are Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and John Prince.

Maroney was a singer and guitarist for the band Subtle Clutch between 2013 and 2015. After exiting the band, he recorded an E.P. titled “Reason To Shake,” which he independently released in 2015. Barely two years later, he released his second E.P., “Big Shot.” Maroney then produced various singles, including ‘I’ve Been Waiting’ and ‘Under My Skin,’ in 2018.

His professional singing career kicked off after he signed with Canvasback Music and Atlantic Records in 2018. They allowed him to include his earlier singles on his third E.P., “Carnival.” The year proved to be a busy one for him. Maroney revealed that he made several big life changes within a month, including dropping out of Lipscomb University. The stress led to him spending two months in rehab before ultimately deciding to continue with his music career. In 2019, he made his debut appearance at South by Southwest, popularly known as South By. Maroney, who is in a relationship with fellow musician Samia Finnerty, released his latest album, “Sunflower,” in 2021.
