ROK Alliance Day – October 1, 2024

ROK Alliance Day is observed on October 1 annually. It marks the anniversary of the signing of the U.S.-ROK Mutual Defense Treaty in 1953, marking the beginning of the alliance between the United States and the Republic of Korea. The Korea Defense Veterans Association (K.D.V.A) established this day in September 2021 as a national day to celebrate the millions of American and Korean veterans who fought in the Korean War and served in Korea since the Armistice Agreement was signed in July 1953. Its goal is to give Americans and Koreans a calm and secure living.

History of ROK Alliance Day

The United States military has played a significant role in influencing public opinions of the United States in Korea, as well as in the creation of the South Korean state. This relationship dates back to 1945 when the United States military government administered South Korea directly under General John Hodges until 1948. Since the start of the Korean War in 1950, the partnership has been forged in blood. 36,516 Americans perished, pushing North Korean troops out of the South and up to the Yalu River border with China during that battle.

The U.S military assisted in the establishment of the Republic of Korea and has maintained a physical presence in the country for virtually its entire history. North Korea invaded the Republic of Korea and started the Korean War during the brief period after U.S forces departed Korea in 1949, underscoring the importance of the connection. In Pacific Asia, North Korea continues to pose a threat to both South Korean and American interests. North Korea was involved in 1,439 serious provocations between 1953 and 2003.

Approximately 28,500 U.S troops are now stationed in South Korea. Leaders in the United States are losing patience with the idea of assisting wealthy allies while their own economy is in difficulty, and resources are being squeezed due to the Budget Control Act of 2011. In many ways, the United States Secretary of Defense’s visit to South Korea in April 2015 represented a microcosm of the alliance’s past and future.
