Kiribati: Education Day

Kiribati Education Day does not have a fixed date and this year will be celebrated on October 6. The day is determined by the government of Kiribati and depends on which day World Teachers’ Day falls. Kiribati is a remote island situated in the Pacific Ocean that has a population of just over 120,000. Education Day is a public holiday that everyone enjoys and as the island nation receives free primary and junior secondary education, it’s an important part of the island’s value system. Typically the day is spent celebrating, with dances, sporting events, and school tours.

International Day for Universal Access to Information

International Day for Universal Access to Information is observed on September 28 every year. This day supports the idea that everyone around the globe has the fundamental right to seek, receive and disseminate information. This right is also linked to the right to freedom of expression. Communication at all levels, local, national, and worldwide, is included. The right to information is necessary for making decisions, engaging in democratic government, and increasing openness which aids citizens in having access to knowledge about how they are being governed. It builds a ground for a fight against corruption. The media also plays a critical role, as it informs the public about topics of interest and relies on the ability to seek and receive information. That is why it is believed that this right is also linked to the right to freedom of the press.

Lumberjack Day

Lumberjack Day is celebrated on September 26 each year. This day aims at celebrating the archetypal woodsman: the lumberjack. It was created in 2005 by Marianne Ways and Colleen AF Venable as an excuse to eat pancakes and waffles with friends. Lumberjack Day is also celebrated because ‘International Talk Like a Pirate Day’ comes a week before it, and Ways and Venable wanted to celebrate a different character. They thought that it was important to have a day to talk about lumberjacks as well. This celebration has grown to be celebrated all around the U.S.
