Of Armenian and Assyrian descent, he followed his parents in escaping to the United States from the Iran-Iraq War and finally settled in Glendale, California, in 1990. After his discharge from the U.S. Army 101st Airborne Division, he worked in the financial service industry by working for Morgan Stanley and the Transamerica Corporation.
