The eminent political commentator and advocate-activist Angela T. Rye was born on October 26, 1979, in Seattle, Washington, into an African-American family. Her father, Eddie Rye Jr., is a community activist and entrepreneur, while her mother, Andrea Rye, is a former college administrator. She attended an all-girls high school in Seattle before enrolling at Washington University. After that, she earned a law degree from Seattle University School of Law. Rye has been involved in social activism since college and has also served as the Western Region Director of the National Black Law Students Association in 2004.

Her political advocacy career began in 2005 when she started working for the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education. In 2006, she moved to Washington and co-founded I.M.P.A.C.T., an organization for youth and young professionals. In 2007, she was appointed as a Senior Advisor to the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Homeland Security.
