Background

Lloyd Harlin Polite Jr., widely known as Lloyd, is an American R&B singer, rapper, and songwriter. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on January 3, 1986, to Robin Lewis Polite and Lloyd Polite, Sr. He has two siblings: Brandy Polite and Chuckie D. Reynolds. Polite grew up in Calliope Projects in Central City, New Orleans. After his father passed away, the family moved to Atlanta, Georgia, and later to New York City. Polite discovered his passion for singing at a young age and began his music career in 1996 as a member of a preteen-boy band, N-Toon, with his brother, Reynolds. The group was the winner of a canceled show by Nickelodeon, “Double Dare 2000.” Although they managed to release two songs in 1999 and 2000, the group disbanded a year later due to a lack of promotion.

In 2003, Polite’s talent was discovered by Irv Gotti, a well-known American D.J. and record producer. He signed to Gotti’s The Inc. as a solo artist. Polite’s solo debut album, “Southside,” was released on July 20, 2004, featuring Ashanti and Scarface. It debuted on the U.S. Billboard 200 at number 11 and ranked number 3 on the R&B/Hip-Hop album charts. Polite’s second album was released on March 13, 2007, with the title “Street Love.” It soared to number two on the U.S. Billboard 200 and R&B/Hip-Hop album charts, selling 145,000 copies. Polite was awarded gold certification for the album and sold more than 500,000 copies domestically. The lead single ‘You,’ featuring Lil Wayne, was a huge commercial success. Polite’s third album, “Lessons in Love,” was released on August 4, 2008. It debuted at number seven and number one on the Billboard 200 and the top R&B/Hip-Hop album charts. Polite’s career received an enormous boost after another collaboration with Lil Wayne, where he was featured in the latter’s song, ‘BedRock.’ He eventually departed from The Inc. and signed into Interscope Records on March 13, 2010. Polite’s fourth album, “King of Hearts,” was released on July 5, 2011. ‘Lay It Down,’ the first single in the album, entered the top 10 of Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs list.

Polite returned to the music scene with his first single in five years, ‘Tru,’ on May 6, 2016. In an interview with Sway Calloway in August of the same year, Polite explained that he had been struggling with the loss of his unborn child due to abortion, which he expressed through the lyrics of ‘Tru.’ Polite later joined EMPIRE on June 23, 2016, and released his fifth studio album “Tru” on August 31, 2018. He was among the line-up of early 2000s artists for ‘The Millennium Tour,’ one of the most popular shows in 2021. He also showcased his acting skill in T.V. One’s 2019 original biopic, “The Bobby Debarge Story,” where he played the role of Gregory Williams.
