Grace Martine Tandon, popularly known by her moniker Daya, was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to parents Hans and Christine. She was raised in the suburbs of Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania. Growing up, she attended St. Bernard School and completed her early education. Thereafter, she enrolled at Mt. Lebanon High School and graduated from this institution. She has four siblings named Avery, Lou, Celia, and Mariana.

When she was three years of age, Daya started taking piano lessons. By the time she was 11 years old, she played jazz piano. During her childhood, she also learned to play several other instruments, such as saxophone, ukulele, guitar, and flute. Growing up, she would spend her summers attending a songwriting workshop at the Interlochen Arts Camp. Daya also attended the Accelerando Music Conservatory in Pittsburgh when she was 11 years old. It was at this institution that she met producer and songwriter Gino Barletta, who later invited her to Los Angeles and work on some original material.

Subsequently, her professional career began when she moved to Los Angeles and began working on her debut single ‘Hide Away.’ The song was released on April 22, 2015, and received acclaim from fans and critics alike. That same year, Daya made her television debut performance on the daytime T.V. show “Today with Kathie Lee and Hoda.” In 2016, the artist collaborated with the Chainsmokers, lending her voice to their track ‘Don’t Let Me Down.’ It eventually topped the list of Hot 100, thereby bringing in more success and recognition her way.
