He was born on October 11, 1946, in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. Hall is of German descent and a Libra by design. He attended Owen J. Roberts High School and began recording as a high school student. He graduated in 1964 and enrolled at Temple University, Philadelphia, majoring in music. As a college student, Hall and four others formed a harmony group called Temptones. They gained popularity and won local competitions. The group recorded some singles for Artic records, and Hall created relationships with the likes of the Temptations, Smokey Robbinson, e.t.c. Hall met John Oates in 1967 while they were undergraduates at Temple University. The duo began playing together until Oates transferred to another university and Hall dropped out in 1969.

By 1972, Hall & Oates released their debut studio album, “Whole Oats.” The duo’s sophomore album “Abandoned Luncheonette” produced the single ‘She’s Gone’ which peaked at number seven in the U.S. Top 10 Charts. Hall & Oates’ third studio album, “War Babies” (1974), was their last with Atlantic Records. They signed to R.C.A. soon after and became mainstream. The duo released 15 more albums from 1975 to 2006. Seven of their 18 albums have been certified platinum by the R.I.A.A., while five received gold certifications.
