National Interpreter Appreciation Day

National Interpreter Appreciation Day is celebrated on May 6 this year. It is always observed on the first Wednesday of May. There are about 6,500 languages in the world, and, naturally, no one person can learn them all. A person who can speak more than five languages is rare and is called a polyglot. Thus, interpreters are needed in government offices, hospitals, businesses, and any organization that will have to deal with people from different linguistic groups or when sign language is needed. Interpreters never have it easy. They have to keep up with the communicators and make sure they pass clear and concise information in real-time.

Occupational Safety and Health Professional Day

Occupational Safety and Health Professional Day is chosen on the Wednesday of the first full week of May, which coincides with May 6 this year. It is observed during North American Occupational Safety and Health Week. It is a day to recognize the dedication and efforts of health and safety professionals who protect the people and work environment from damage and hazards. Industrial jobs are one obvious example where a dedicated occupational safety and health professional is needed. When we work with heavy machinery that can move at high speed, disaster is always a step away, and it’s always better safe than sorry. A safety failure is not something that will only affect a single individual, but the entire plant or the area where the factory is situated. Hence, a better generation of safety and health professionals are trained and ready for any situation that may arise. However, safety remains a collective responsibility. All employees are a part of the greater mission of health and safety.

Rhode Island Independence Day

Rhode Island Independence Day is on May 4. It is a day to commemorate the independence of Rhode Island making it the first sovereign and independent state in the western world. Rhode Island was the center of a triage trade between rum, slaves, and molasses in the 1700s. It was a British colony back in those days. Rhode Island did not find British policies matching its expectation. The Sugar Act of 1764 was especially not well received in the area. The state has prosperous ports which made fortunes from trading. Eventually, on May 4, 1776, The General Assembly of the Colony of Rhode Island declared independence from Great Britain.
