Yukon Heritage Day

Yukon Heritage Day brings the history and culture of the smallest of Canada’s three territories to the forefront of public attention, on the Friday before the last Sunday in February. Schools and Yukon government offices close, while business owners have the option of giving employees time off.

The day is designed to coincide with The Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous, a festival in Yukon’s capital, Whitehorse. The event specifically revolves around the Yukon Gold Rush period of the 1890’s, featuring a “Queen” contest, sled dog races, air shows, and snow sculpture contests. Sounds like a chilly but fun time!

Letter to an Elder Day

Letter to an Elder Day on February 26 is a holiday celebrated by sending an elder a handwritten letter of love. Letter to an Elder Day was started with the aim of fighting loneliness with love among senior communities. This day comes once a year to honor the art of letter-writing as a way to send love, one letter at a time!

Forget Me Not Day

Unlike the whimsical flowers, Forget Me Not Day, on November 10 is a day to ensure that we really won’t forget. The holiday pays tribute to returning soldiers who have lost blood and limbs — things that truly can’t be forgotten — in the line of battle. Forget Me Not Day has been around since World War I, although it’s often lost in the hustle and bustle of preparing for Thanksgiving.
