National Ice Cream for Breakfast Day – February 1, 2025

Happy National Ice Cream for Breakfast Day! Surprisingly, this holiday was invented in New York in the middle of the winter. Created in the 1960s (clearly, because it’s a groovy idea), the day is further proof that you can eat ice cream at any time of the year, any time of the day, and on any occasion. So on the first Saturday in February, go ahead and get your treat on. Before noon. We won’t judge.

Official Recipe:  The Breakfast Banana Split

Prep Time:  10 minutes
Servings:  1-2

Ingredients
  • 1 Pint Ben & Jerry’s Chunky Monkey Ice Cream
  • 2 Tablespoons of Sliced Almonds
  • 2 Frozen Toaster Waffles
  • 1 Banana
  • 1/2 Cup Brown Sugar
  • Unsalted Butter
  • Chocolate Syrup
Directions
  1. Peel banana and chop it into thick, round slices.  Sprinkle each banana slice with a pinch of brown sugar.
  2. Add butter to a medium size nonstick pan and heat over medium high heat.  Add banana slices and remaining brown sugar.
  3. Cook bananas until golden brown underneath (about 4-5 minutes).  Gently flip bananas to brown other side (about 1 minute) and then immediately set aside caramelized bananas on plate.
  4. Toast frozen waffles in toaster or toaster oven until golden brown.
  5. Place the pint of Ben & Jerry’s Chunky Monkey ice cream on its side.  With a large chef’s knife or serrated knife, cut all the way through the pint of ice cream near the lid.  Make another cut about 2 inches below the first cut to form a thick, round slice of ice cream with packaging still attached.
  6. Place the ice cream slice on one toaster waffle and unwrap the carton from ice cream.
  7. Place caramelized bananas on top of ice cream (creating a layer of banana) and drizzle chocolate syrup on top.  Sprinkle sliced almonds on top of syrup.
  8. Place second toaster waffle on top to form a breakfast sandwich.  You’re welcome.

National Ice Cream for Breakfast Day Activities

  1. Eat ice cream for breakfast, of course

This is the best and most obvious way to celebrate this fantastic holiday.  Serve yourself a scoop, serve your family a scoop, or even serve your significant other a scoop in bed. How about putting a scoop in your coffee for an affogato?  Now we're talking!

  2. Try something new with ice cream

There are endless ways to get creative, and limitless options for new recipes.  Try ice cream with a muffin, in a fruit smoothie, or on top of your cereal. Today's the day where you try it all, and we don't judge. The only limit is your imagination.

  3. Post your frozen breakfast creation on social media

There is no better way to make your friends jealous than to post your ice cream creation to social media. Nothing says, "I totally know how to rock my mornings" more than a photo of a waffle ice cream sandwich with a tall cup of coffee. Mm, we're getting hungry. You already know what we'll be having for breakfast today.

Why We Love National Ice Cream for Breakfast Day

  1. Who doesn't love eating ice cream for breakfast?

Okay, it's obvious that everyone loves ice cream. That's why eating it for breakfast could actually start your day off on the right foot! If you don't eat dairy you can still enjoy all the wonderful alternatives—cashew, almond, coconut, soy, avocado, and even rice milk ice cream! Now eat that sugar.

  2. Eating ice cream for breakfast wakes and makes you happy

In a recent study in by Kyorin University professor Yoshihiko Koga, people who consumed ice cream for breakfast showed better reaction time and were able to process information better than those who did not have ice cream. Delving deeper into the science, Koga found that the people who had ice cream first thing in the morning had an increase in high-frequency alpha waves, which are associated with higher levels of alertness and reduced mental irritation.

  3. Ice cream is a source of vitamins (really)

Vitamin A, B, C, D and E are found in every scoop of ice cream. Thiamine and niacin are much needed by the body as well—and guess where you can find them? The Vitamin K in ice cream can help reduce blood clots as well.  Taking your vitamins never tasted so good. So throw away those nasty gummies and have a scoop of what the doctor ordered!
