National C60 Day, on October 9, creates awareness of the molecule C60 — labeled as a “free radical sponge” with unbelievable antioxidant properties, and countless benefits. Although it may sound like the name of a character from “Star Wars” — and was in fact discovered by scientists studying interstellar space — C60 is completely natural and is actually found in the carbon-rich atmospheres of giant red stars. C60’s antioxidant power is several hundred times higher than that of conventional antioxidants, which is what sets it apart. It works at the cellular level to lift the oxidative burden and enhances mitochondrial function.
What sets C60 manufacturers apart is how they purify C60. C60, purified through sublimation (vs. the commonly used “oven-baked method,” which involves solvents) is recommended, and although it’s a little pricier than other C60 products, you’ll definitely get what you pay for — a cleaner product with absolutely no solvents used during the purification process. You can get your hands on 99.99% pure, sublimated C60 through C60 Purple Power.

History of National C60 Day
Carbon is the basis of life, and despite it being a common element, it is one of the most complex and most studied. C60, or Carbon 60, is a fullerene uniquely made up of 60 carbon atoms that naturally occur, resembling a tiny, hollow soccer ball. The proper scientific term for C60 is Buckminsterfullerene, named after the revolutionary theorist, inventor, and futurist, Buckminster Fuller. He was the first to hypothesize the existence of the molecule in 1979 and predicted that the carbon molecule would be widely used in medicine in the future.
In 1985, Sir Harold Walter Kroto of the University of Sussex along with Richard Smalley and Bob Curl of Rice University conducted experiments to determine the molecule responsible for absorbing infrared light in outer space. Spectrometry evidence showed the formation of C60 atoms, with a spheroidal geometry. Their serendipitous findings resulted in the discovery of C60. The molecule was named Buckminsterfullerene in honor of Buckminster Fuller.
The three scientists were awarded the Nobel Prize for discovering C60 on October 9, 1996. Every year on this date, National C60 Day is celebrated.
So where did C60 come from? Not only is C60 found in nature, but it very likely predates life on Earth. It is produced by dying stars, called red giants, and it can be found in meteor impacts, lightning strikes, and very tiny amounts can be found in the burnt wicks of candles. The incredible versatility and resilience of C60 have led some to suggest that C60 may have played a part in the formation of life itself. Today, C60 has gained a reputation in the alternative health community and is increasingly recommended by doctors and nutritionists.

Why National C60 Day is Important
Not only is C60 a powerful antioxidant, but it also won’t interfere with signaling molecules or medicines, unlike many other antioxidants. C60 only responds to highly charged oxidative radicals such as hydroxyl radicals and superoxide.
Despite its wonderful properties and health benefits, C60 is relatively unknown as it’s a recently discovered molecule. There is also resistance to trying C60 and making it a staple in our lives. Most of this is due to a lack of awareness about the benefits, as well as misconceptions and misinformation surrounding research about C60. National C60 Day informs everyone about the amazing discovery of C60 and its potential benefits.
Interesting C60 Studies
- A 2007 study found that C60 in human mast cells lessened allergic reactions and related inflammation.
- A 2009 human study found that C60 could promote hair growth by combating oxidative damage around the hair follicles.
- In a 2010 human study, C60 was found to protect human skin cells against ultraviolet damage.
- In a 2010 double-blind, human study, it was found that when applied topically, C60 was effective at lessening the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
