Mesut Özil was born in Germany to Mustafa and Gulizar. He is the last-born son out of three siblings and a Muslim of Turkish origin. He started off his life as a child from a poor background. Özil was born during the period of industrial decline in Germany, when the unemployment rate was high, forcing his parents to work low-paying jobs to support the family. Despite these challenges, Özil was determined to succeed.

He began his senior club career playing for his hometown club Schalke 04. When he was 19, in 2008, he signed with Werder Bremen, working hard and winning his first season. This allowed him to play for Real Madrid. There, he ranked first in league assists for three straight seasons and helped the club to win a La Liga title. In 2013, Özil was signed to Arsenal in a $40 million transfer, making him the most expensive German player at the time. In England, he helped end Arsenal’s nine-year trophy drought and win three F.A. cups. He also recorded the second-most assists ever in a Premier League season. In 2021, Özil joined Fenerbahce on a free transfer.

Özil currently holds the record for the most German Player of the Year wins, with five of them. He was the top assist provider at the 2010 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2012, where he helped his country’s team to reach the semi-final. Özil helped Germany to win the World Cup in 2014 but retired from International competitions in 2018.
