Background

Megan Thee Stallion is just one of the many artists who started online and rose to fame, but one of the very few to shake up the rap genre in the process. And this is in no small part to her captivating style and contagious confidence, which resulted in catchy and uplifting songs that fans love. Stallion was born Megan Jovon Ruth Pete on February 15, 1995, in San Antonio, Texas. Her zodiac sign is Aquarius and her ethnicity is African American. She is the daughter of Joseph Pete and Holly Aleece Thomas, who was a rapper under the name Holly-Wood. When she was a child, her mother would bring her to her recording sessions, and, inspired by her mother, Stallion began to write rap during her teenage years. However, her mother insisted she wait until she was 21 to begin a career in rap. While attending college at Prairie View A&M University, she started uploading her freestyle videos on social media. One of them, in which she battled male opponents in a freestyle battle, stood out in particular. It went viral, and Stallion’s social media following increased exponentially, and she gained many enthusiastic fans that she called ‘hotties.’

When it was time to choose her stage name, she stayed close to her origins. Due to her height and body frame, she was often called a ‘stallion’ during her teenage years because that is the colloquial term for women with those features in the southern United States. And so, her name Megan Pete became Megan Thee Stallion. In 2016, she released her first single, ‘Like a Stallion’ on SoundCloud, and followed it with two mixtapes on the same platform. In 2017, she released her debut E.P., “Make It Hot.” In 2018, she released a second E.P., “Tina Snow.” In 2019, Stallion released the song ‘Big Ole Freak’ as a single from her former E.P., which peaked at number 65 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and a highly-praised mixtape called “Fever.” In August of the same year, her song ‘Hot Girl’ was used in the opening titles for H.B.O’s “A Black Lady Sketch Show,” and, following the success of her ‘Hot Girl Summer’ meme, she released a song of the same name featuring Nicki Minaj and Ty Dolla Sign. It peaked at number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and launched her to stardom, with “Time” magazine placing her on their Time 100 Next list.

In 2020, she released her third E.P., “Suga,” and one of its songs, ‘Savage,’ became the soundtrack to a viral TikTok dance. A remix of the song featuring Beyoncé was released shortly after, and it peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. In August of that same year, she featured on Cardi B’s single ‘WAP,’ which became her second number one on the Billboard Hot 100. In November, she released her debut studio album, “Good News,” which debuted at number two on the Billboard Hot 200. In that same year, she was featured in “Time” magazine’s Time 100 list. In March of 2021, Stallion won three Grammy Awards, including the Best Rap Song award. In November of the same year, she was included in “Glamour’s” Women of the Year list. She also won three American Music Awards in that same month.
