National Ta Day Hero

The 'Ta' Surname

Rather than a single individual, the true 'hero' of National Ta Day is the surname itself and the vast community it represents. Originating from Chinese communities, particularly in Guangdong and Fujian provinces, 'Ta' is a transliteration of a Chinese surname with meanings such as 'to thank,' 'apologize,' 'wither,' and 'decline.' It signifies a shared heritage and a global network of individuals connected by this common name, many of whom have settled overseas over the past 400 years.

History of National Ta Day

Ta is a Vietnamese surname of Han Chinese origin. It is considered to be the Vietnamese variation of the Chinese surname Xie. When people from South China migrated to Vietnam, they changed their surnames and adopted Vietnamese surnames. As their Chinese surname translated into ‘thank’, they adopted the surname ‘Ta’ as it also meant thank you, but in Vietnamese.

Many people with the Ta surname have made their mark in history, and one of them is Ta Phong Tần. Born on September 15, 1968, Ta is a Vietnamese dissident blogger who was a former policewoman and a member of the Communist Party of Vietnam. Ta Phong Tan began blogging while she was a policewoman, and in 2004, she became a freelance journalist. She started a blog titled ‘Cong Ly va Su That’ in 2006 which translates into ‘Justice and Truth’, which reported on the truth about police abuses. Shortly after, she was expelled from the Community Party of Vietnam and lost her job because of extreme criticism. She was arrested in 2011 on anti-state propaganda charges.

On July 30, 2011, her mother, Dang Thi Kim Lieng, immolated herself in front of the government offices in Bac Lieu Province to protest charges against her daughter. Ta Phong Tan was sentenced to 10 years in prison. This decision was opposed by many groups, including the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, the U.S. State Department, Amnesty International, and Human Rights Watch. She was released in 3 years and traveled to the U.S. after that.
