International Respect for Chickens Day

International Respect for Chickens Day is on May 4. It is a day to promote compassion and respectful treatment of chickens and other domestic fowl. United Poultry Concerns started on this day in 2005. Karen Davis started United Poultry Concerns not just for chickens, but also for other domestic farm birds like turkeys and ducks. Raising these birds is for food production, experiments, education, and entertainment. The International Respect for Chickens Day aims to reduce the pain and plight of these birds by raising awareness about their condition among the public. The day also emphasizes the importance and benefits of a vegan lifestyle.

Greenery Day

Greenery Day is observed on May 4 every year in Japan. The national holiday encourages people to commune with nature to express their gratitude and appreciation for its benefits. Initially, the holiday was observed on April 29 to commemorate the birthday of Emperor Shōwa, the emperor of Japan from 1926 to 1989. But when Emperor Akihito took to the throne, the name of the holiday was changed from Birthday of the Emperor to Greenery Day in recognition of the wartime emperor’s love for greenery. The new holiday name also acquired a new date, May 4, while April 29 became Shōwa Day.
