Pygmy Hippo Day is celebrated on April 8 to raise awareness about the endangered species of hippos. A pygmy hippo is the smaller cousin of a hippopotamus. They are an endangered species that are rapidly moving towards extinction. There are about 2,000 pygmy hippos left in the world, and these are mainly found in Ivory Coast, Guinea, and Sierra Leone. Pygmy hippos are about half the height of a hippopotamus and weigh less than a quarter of a full-sized hippo. They are believed to have diverged from the common hippo about 10 million years ago.
National Dog Fighting Awareness Day

National Dog Fighting Awareness Day is April 8 and has been observed every year since 2014. It’s no wonder why dogfighting is banned in the entire country. Yet the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals believes there are still many dog fighting rings out there, so they created this day as part of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month in April, to spread awareness and encourage people to take action against dog fighting. For these competitions, dogs are trained to severely wound or kill their adversary, and it’s all too common that losers are abandoned without receiving any medical treatment.
Draw a Bird Day

Draw a Bird Day is celebrated every year on April 8. This day is not about drawing or artistic skills, but about having fun and sharing drawings of birds. There is no need in being an expert in drawing to celebrate this day. The key is to spread joy and pleasure as everyone shares their drawings regardless of how they look. It is a movement that originated in the U.K. in the 1940s. You are free to sketch any type of bird. You have the option of drawing a chicken, chaffinch, peacock penguin, or puffin. You’ll be astonished at how many different kinds of birds there are if you do an internet search.
