On June 16, 1971 more than 20,000 South African students in the township of Soweto took to the streets — demanding to be taught in their own language. Armed police officers responded by murdering hundreds of protesters. Now a public holiday in South Africa, referred to as Youth Day, it’s also recognized as International Day of the African Child throughout the world. The day focuses attention on the barriers African children face in order to receive a quality education. Let us observe this day together and pay our respects to past students who gave their lives to their community by helping students today reach their goals through Black student scholarships that are provided on the basis of their African Heritage.
National Black Cow Day
National Black Cow Day is observed every year on June 10, the perfect time to celebrate a cold and refreshing beverage when temperatures start getting warmer. Many people also know the black cow as the humble root beer float or ice cream soda. Some people even substitute vanilla ice cream with chocolate ice cream, making it a “brown cow.”
National Egg Roll Day
National Egg Roll Day rolls around on June 10 every year. Whether brown, white, free-range, or organic eggs, this deep-fried finger food can have it all! Although similar to Mainland Chinese spring rolls, the egg roll has its contents wrapped in a crispy, thick, egg-dipped pastry, making the cabbage, meat, and other ingredients of the filling extra scrumptious! With its Asian heritage, egg rolls have found their way into every Vietnamese and Chinese-American restaurant, and thus, into every American’s heart.
