Background

Nurmagomedov’s interest in M.M.A. sprouted from watching M.M.A. students train at his local gym when he was a kid. He started wrestling at the age of eight, being initially coached by his father, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov. He made his M.M.A. debut in 2008, winning four matches in a month. He remained undefeated as the years went on, eventually catching the eye of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (U.F.C.), with which he signed a six-fight deal in early 2011.

He proceeded to dominate the world of M.M.A., winning the title of U.F.C. Lightweight Champion for four years in a row from 2018 to 2021. Nurmagomedov chose to retire in 2021 to the disappointment of his fans, many of whom attempted to coax his return to the U.F.C. Ultimately, U.F.C. president Dana White accepted Nurmagomedov’s wishes to retire, officially announcing it on 19 March 2021.
