Background

John Clayton Mayer was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, on October 16, 1977. He spent his junior year at Brien McMahon High School in Norwalk, attending the Center for Global Studies. After seeing Michael J. Fox’s portrayal of Marty McFly in “Back to the Future,” Mayer’s father rented him a guitar when he was 13. A neighbor handed him a cassette of Stevie Ray Vaughan, which led him to other blues guitarists. While still in high school, he began performing in pubs and other locations after two years of practice. Mayer was 17 when he was diagnosed with cardiac dysrhythmia and spent the weekend in the hospital. The night he left the hospital, he wrote his first song.

Mayer considered attending college to pursue music, but his parents persuaded him of it. He then enrolled at Berklee College of Music when he was 19. At the encouragement of his college roommate Clay Cook, they left Berklee after two semesters and moved to Atlanta, where they formed a band called LoFi Masters and began performing in local coffee shops and club venues like Eddie’s Attic. According to Cook, they had aesthetic differences because of Mayer’s desire to go more toward pop music, so the two separated, and Mayer went on to pursue a solo career.

Mayer recorded the independent E.P. “Inside Wants Out” with the assistance of local producer and engineer Glenn Matullo. There are eight songs on the E.P., and Mayer performs lead vocals and plays guitar on all of them. With a full band and bass guitars played by E.P. co-producer David “DeLa” LaBruyere, the first song, ‘Back To You,’ was performed. The first commercial single from the album, ‘No Such Thing,’ was co-written by Cook, who also co-wrote several other songs. Cook’s only performance was backing vocals on the tune ’Comfortable.’

“Room for Squares” spawned many hit songs, including ‘No Such Thing,’ ‘Your Body is a Wonderland,’ and ‘Why Georgia.’ Mayer won a Grammy for ‘Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.’ In 2005, Mayer formed the Mayer Trio with bassist Pino Palladino and drummer Steve Jordan. On August 20, 2013, Mayer released a new album titled “Paradise Valley.” With 145,560 copies sold in the United States during its first week, it debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 list. After this, Mayer released the movie “The Search for Everything” on April 14, 2017. On May 10, 2018, Mayer released the song ‘New Light,’ which he co-produced with No I.D. In October 2018, he released the song ‘I Guess I Just Feel Like.’ On March 15, 2020, he announced his writing songs for a new album.
