James Brien Comey, Jr. was born on December 14, 1960, in Yonkers, New York. His parents are Joan Marie Comey and James Brien Comey. His zodiac sign is Sagittarius, and he has Irish ancestry. His family moved from New York to Allendale, New Jersey, in the 1970s, and he attended Northern Highlands Regional High School in Allendale, New Jersey. He studied chemistry and religion at the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, and graduated in 1982. He proceeded to the University of Chicago Law School, where he bagged a law degree in 1985. He served as a law clerk for the United States District Judge in Manhattan.

In 1987, two years after graduating from law school, Comey became an assistant U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York. He worked for Rudolph W. Giuliani until 1993, when he moved to Virginia to become a partner at the law firm McGuireWoods, LLP. After working at the law firm for three years, Comey returned to government employment.

He became an assistant U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia in 1996, and he was promoted to U.S. attorney and put in charge of the New York Southern District in 2002. He became deputy attorney-general in 2003 and even served as acting attorney-general in 2004.
Comey left his job at the Department of Justice in 2005 to become general counsel for Lockheed Martin Corporation, the largest defense contractor, and left in 2010 to serve as general counsel at Bridgewater Associates, the then-largest hedge fund. He held that job until 2013 when he was sworn in as the seventh director of the F.B.I., a job he held until 2017.
