Background

Hans Zimmer grew up in Königstein-Falkenstein, where he played the piano at home but only briefly took piano lessons since he loathed the discipline of a formal lesson. Zimmer attended the Ecole D’Humanité, a Swiss cantonal international boarding school. As a youngster, he went to London and attended Hurtwood House School. During his childhood, he was influenced by Ennio Morricone’s film scores, and he has stated that ‘Once Upon a Time in the West’ was the music that encouraged him to become a film composer.

Zimmer began his musical career in the 1970s with the band Krakatoa and then with the Buggles, a new wave band created in London in 1977 by Trevor Horn, Geoff Downes, and Bruce Woolley. Zimmer appears briefly in the Buggles’ 1979 music video for “Video Killed the Radio Star.” He joined the Italian band Krisma after quitting the Buggles, a new wave band created in 1976 by Maurizio Arcieri and Christina Moser. Krisma appeared as a featured synthesist on his third album, Cathode Mamma. He has also collaborated with Warren Cann of Ultravox on the band Helden. Zimmer and Cann were invited to play with the Spanish ensemble Mecano in Segovia in 1984. Two songs from this performance were featured on the 1985 Spanish-only C.D. “Mecano: En Concierto.”

Zimmer has received numerous honors and awards, including the B.M.I. Film Music Awards’ Richard Kirk Career Achievement Award in 1996, the Palm Springs International Film Festival’s Frederick Loewe Award for ‘Film Composing’ in 2003, the ASCAP Henry Mancini Award in 2003, and the Max Steiner Film Music Achievement Award at Hollywood in Vienna in 2018.
