Anthony Cornelius Hamilton was born on January 28, 1971, in Charlotte, North Carolina. Hamilton began singing in his local church choir when he was a teenager. During his time at South Mecklenburg High School, he sang for his school’s choir, which won several awards. After meeting orchestral flutist and producer Mark Sparks in 1992, Hamilton relocated to New York and signed with Andre Harrell’s record label, Uptown Records.

In 1999, he co-wrote Donell Jones’s hit song, ‘U Know What’s Up.’ The following year, he joined soul singer D’Angelo as a backup singer on the promotional tour for DD’Angelo’s album “Voodoo.” In 2003, he released his album “Comin’ Where I’m From,” which earned him nominations for the BET Awards, the Grammy Awards, the N.A.A.C.P. Image Awards, and the Soul Train Music Awards. He contributed to several other artists’ music throughout the early 2000s, such as rapper Jadakiss, jazz musician Roy Anthony Hargrove, and blues singer Buddy Guy. In 2009, he won his first Grammy Award for his song ‘You’ve Got The Love I Need’ with Al Green in the ‘Best Traditional R&B Performance’ category.

In the early 2010s, Hamilton began working with many artists signed to Def Jam Recordings, such as rappers Big K.R.I.T. and Nas. He contributed vocals for the latter artist’s album, “Life is Good,” which debuted at the top position on the Billboard 200. In 2016, Hamilton released his sixth studio album entitled “What I’m Feeling,” which reached the second-most top position on the Billboard R.&.B. chart, making it his best-performing album to date.
