William Sherer, a Master Sommelier and award-winning wine director at Aureole restaurant in Las Vegas, has launched his own line of California wines called Iberian Remix. Sherer is using Albariño grapes from Edna Valley and Tempranillo, Grenache, and Carignan from the Central Coast to create wines that evoke the flavors of Spain but with a distinctly Californian twist. Sherer is also planning to expand into Austrian wines with a "Danube Remix" label in the near future.
Why it matters
Sherer's Iberian Remix wines represent a unique approach to winemaking that challenges the notion that Spanish grape varieties can't thrive outside of their native Iberian climate. By proving that these grapes can produce high-quality wines in California, Sherer is expanding the horizons of what's possible in the state's diverse wine regions.
The details
For his Iberian Remix line, Sherer is sourcing Albariño grapes from Edna Valley's Paragon Vineyard and Tempranillo, Grenache, and Carignan from California's Central Coast. He is aiming to create wines that evoke the flavors of Spain but with a distinctly Californian character. Sherer was inspired to launch the project after an importer told him Albariño grown in America "wouldn't work." He is now proving that theory wrong by producing flavorful, complex wines from these Spanish grape varieties.
- Sherer earned the prestigious Master Sommelier designation 12 years ago.
- Sherer's Iberian Remix wines will be released in early 2011.
- Sherer plans to launch a "Danube Remix" line of Austrian wines, including a Grüner Veltliner, later this year.

What they’re saying
“Iberian Remix is not a recreation of the Spanish originals, but that doesn't mean they're not high-quality wines. And they're true California wines. Even the label design evokes 'Endless Summer.'”

“The whole thing would not have happened had I not found the grapes that were available. Growers appeared who found that they had planted too much of the grapes I needed. I was happy to help relieve them of some.”
— William Sherer, Master Sommelier and Winemaker (nowandzin.com)
What’s next
Sherer plans to release his "Danube Remix" line of Austrian wines, including a Grüner Veltliner, later this year after the grapes are harvested.
The takeaway
By proving that Spanish grape varieties like Albariño can thrive in California's diverse wine regions, Master Sommelier William Sherer is expanding the horizons of what's possible in the state's winemaking scene. His Iberian Remix wines show that California can produce high-quality, distinctive wines from non-native grape varieties.
