What Are Some of the Most Huggable Dog Breeds?
According to experts, these dogs love nothing more than a good cuddle.

Who can resist giving their good girl or boy a hug? And with National Hug Your Dog Day just around the corner on April 10, it’s the perfect excuse to shower your pup with some extra love and cuddles. But did you know that, according to experts, not all dogs are natural hug lovers and some breeds are more physically affectionate than others?
David Frei, a world-renowned dog breed expert, and Teoti Anderson, a seasoned dog-training expert with more than three decades of experience, weigh in on the doggos that are born to be snugglers.
Golden Retrievers
It’s no surprise that Golden Retrievers top the list. Known for their friendly, affectionate temperaments, Golden Retrievers love being close to their humans and want to be part of everything. “They’ve got this great devotion and charisma,” says Frei, who adds that they make terrible guard dogs and wonderful family pets. They’re gentle, loyal, and emotionally intuitive, and love nothing more than a good hug.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels
This pint-sized breed is one of the most affectionate and loves nothing more than curling up in a warm lap. “They live for a lap. We call them ‘love sponges.’ Their tails are always wagging. They just love people and want to follow you from room to room,” says Frei. However, Anderson cautions that these dogs may bite when they’re in pain, so if your spaniel’s behavior changes, or they’re not as accepting of your affection, you should contact your veterinarian to rule out health issues, because this is out of character for these dogs.
Labrador Retrievers
Labs are playful, loyal, and always down for a cuddle session—especially if it follows a long game of fetch. They’re one of the most popular dog breeds in the U.S. for a reason, and their affectionate nature is a big part of that. “There’s a reason why the Labrador has been so highly ranked all these years. They’re smart, easy to groom, affectionate, and eager to please,” explains Anderson.
Poodles
Poodles may look fancy but they’re secretly softies. Miniature and Toy Poodles, in particular, thrive on human interaction. They’re sensitive and love attention, and hugging is just part of the package. They’re among the smartest and most affectionate dog breeds and make loyal, loving members of their family.
Newfoundlands
Also known as “nanny dogs,” Newfoundlands are big, fluffy, and famously gentle. Think of them as the gentle giants of the dog world. “The Newf is not a dog for neat freaks. They’re a lot of dog, and they’ll put that loving, drooling, water-covered face in your lap or on your shirt,” teases Frei. This dog breed doesn’t just tolerate hugs, they live for them.
Whether your pup is a pro snuggler or more of a paws-off pal, National Hug Your Dog Day is a great excuse to show them some love, but on their terms, of course.
