Scott Weiland

Background

The late American singer and songwriter Scott Weiland was well-known for his powerful vocals. He was born Scott Richard Kline on October 27, 1967, in California, U.S., to Kent Kline and Sharon Williams. His parents divorced when he was five and his stepfather, David Weiland, legally adopted him. After finishing schooling in Ohio and Huntington, he enrolled at Orange Coast College in California.

In 1989, Weiland founded the band Mighty Joe Young with bassist Robert DeLeo and others. Following a conflict, they changed the name to the Stone Temple Pilots. In 1992, their first album, “Core,” became a huge success. In 1994, their second album, “Purple,” further cemented their reputation. The hit single ‘Plush’ from the album earned them their first Grammy Award for ‘Best Hard Rock Performance with Vocal.’ In 1995, Weiland co-founded the alternative rock band Magnificent Bastards with Vincent Indrizzio. Later that year, he returned to the Stone Temple Pilots, and in 1996, they released their third album, “Tony Music…Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop.” Unfortunately, it was around this time that Weiland developed a drug addiction problem and had to enter rehab. In 1998, he released his first solo album titled, “12 Bar Blues.”

From 1999 to 2001, Weiland was a part of the Stone Temple Pilots, but quit due to internal altercations. In 2003, he joined the former members of Guns N’ Roses and co-founded Velvet Revolve with Slash, Matt Sorum, and others. Their first album, “Contraband,” was released in 2004 and was a massive success. The single ‘Slither’ from the album won Weiland his second Grammy Award for ‘Best Hard Rock Performance with Vocal’, along with Velvet Revolver. From 2005 to 2008, Weiland released singles and albums with Guns N’ Roses. He reunited with the Stone Temple Pilots and toured across the U.S. In 2015, while on tour with the Wildabouts,” Weiland was found dead of an accidental drug overdose.
