The Las Vegas Raiders have hired veteran coach Mike McCoy as their new assistant head coach, according to an NFL Network report. McCoy, who previously served as head coach of the San Diego Chargers from 2013-2016 and as interim head coach of the Tennessee Titans to end the 2025 season, will join first-time head coach Klint Kubiak's staff in Las Vegas.

Why it matters

The addition of McCoy, an experienced NFL coach, to Kubiak's staff provides the young head coach with a seasoned veteran to lean on as he takes over the Raiders. McCoy's previous head coaching experience and offensive coordinator roles could prove valuable in helping develop the Raiders' offense and supporting Kubiak's transition to being a first-time head coach.

The details

McCoy, 53, has over two decades of NFL coaching experience, including four seasons as the head coach of the San Diego Chargers from 2013-2016 and a stint as the interim head coach of the Tennessee Titans to end the 2025 season. As the Chargers' head coach, he led the team to a playoff berth in 2013 after a 9-7 regular season record, but his overall tenure was less successful, with the Chargers going 27-37 during his time. After being fired by the Chargers, McCoy returned to the Denver Broncos as offensive coordinator in 2017 before taking the same job with the Arizona Cardinals in 2018. Most recently, he served as quarterbacks coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2022-2024 before joining the Titans as interim head coach.
