Roblox's new age-based accounts aim to create a safer, more secure digital environment for the platform's millions of young users.California City TodayRoblox is rolling out separate age-based accounts for minors on its popular gaming platform. Starting in June, users aged 5-8 will be placed in a 'Roblox Kids' account with restricted messaging and access to only 'minimal' or 'mild' content, while those aged 9-15 will get 'Roblox Select' accounts with more chat functions and access to 'moderate' content. This is the latest in a series of safety updates from Roblox as the company faces mounting scrutiny and lawsuits over its alleged failures to protect young users from predators and inappropriate content.
Why it matters
Roblox, with over 151 million daily active users, is the world's largest social gaming platform for children. The introduction of age-based accounts is an attempt by the company to better control access to content and communication features based on users' ages, in response to growing concerns about child safety on the platform.
The details
The new age-based accounts will automatically restrict features and content access based on the user's age. The 'Roblox Kids' account for 5-8 year olds will disable all messaging by default and only allow access to games with 'minimal' or 'mild' content ratings. The 'Roblox Select' account for 9-15 year olds will gradually introduce more chat functions and access to 'moderate' content. Roblox is also transitioning to the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) framework to provide region-specific content ratings. Parents will have expanded controls to manage chat settings and block games up to age 15.
- Roblox will roll out the new age-based accounts starting in early June 2026.
- Later in 2026, Roblox will begin transitioning to the IARC content rating system.
