National Linda Day

National Linda Day is celebrated on May 17 every year. It is a day to celebrate everyone named Linda. It is predominantly a female name and is of German origin and stems from the word ‘Linde’ — but has become associated with the German word ‘Lind,’ which means ‘soft’ or ‘tender.’ Over time, support for its appeal came from the neo-Latin language (Italian, Spanish, or Portuguese) word ‘Linda’ which is the feminine form of ‘Lindo’ and means ‘beautiful,’ ‘pretty,’ or ‘cute’ in Spanish and Portuguese and means ‘clean’ in Italian. The variation of the name is spelled ‘Lynda.’

National Senior Fraud Awareness Day

National Senior Fraud Awareness Day is observed on May 15 every year. Its objective is to raise awareness of fraudulent schemes older adults often fall prey to, as they lose approximately $36.5 billion annually due to financial fraud. Due to this alarming statistic, the U.S. Congress declared the establishment of National Senior Fraud Awareness Day to promote awareness about and improvement of methods to ensure the safety of elderly U.S. residents. National Senior Fraud Awareness Day was established in 2018 and has remained an annual occurrence.

International AIDS Candlelight Memorial

International AIDS Candlelight Memorial, which takes place on the third Sunday of May, is celebrated on May 17 this year. Two of these include remembering those who have died of AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) and honoring the people who have dedicated their lives to helping those living with and affected by H.I.V. (human immunodeficiency virus). H.I.V.-positive individuals created an annual candlelight ceremony in 1983, and hundreds of events have since been held throughout the world. As a result of these events, H.I.V. awareness has increased. The memorial is also a movement to mobilize communities. It is through this memorial that the stigma and discrimination associated with the disease are addressed — now, new generations have reason to hope.
