National American Paddlefish Day

National American Paddlefish Day is observed on March 9 every year. The American paddlefish, a prehistoric freshwater fish, faces the threat of endangerment due to human activities. Paddlefish have been illicitly hunted for their eggs and flesh for many years and have become a vulnerable species. In 2019, the Chinese paddlefish was declared extinct, leaving the American paddlefish as the world’s only remaining species. To educate people on the danger faced by paddlefish and protect their population and current habitats, the Shreveport Aquarium founded National American Paddlefish Day.

Custom Chief’s Day

Custom Chief’s Day is annually celebrated as a public holiday on March 5 in the Republic of Vanuatu. It’s a day to recognize the National Council of Chiefs, or the Malvatu Mauri, which was established in 1977 to propose new ways to preserve the traditional Vanuatu way of life. The tribal chiefs are elected by members of the district councils of chiefs, and their main role is to advise the government on matters surrounding the culture and indigenous languages of Vanuatu. Although they have no actual legislative power, the government always welcomes their advice.
