The story begins in 1989, when Michelle Rose Gilman founded Fusion Academy in Solana Beach, California. What started as a small tutoring program was born from a simple truth: not every student thrives in a traditional classroom. Michelle envisioned a place where every learner could be seen, supported, and celebrated for who they are. That vision became the foundation for Fusion’s one-to-one teaching model—where each student works with one teacher per class, learning at their own pace, in their own way.

By 2001, Fusion had grown into a fully accredited middle and high school built entirely on this model of individualized instruction. The approach proved transformative, helping students rediscover their confidence and love of learning. As word spread, more families sought out the personalized education experience, and in 2010 Fusion expanded beyond its first campus, opening in Los Angeles with the support of Fusion Education Group.

Throughout the 2010s, Fusion’s model gained national attention as campuses opened across the country—each one committed to helping students thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
