Virginia Tech forward Kayl Petersen has announced that she will be transferring to play at Marquette next season. Petersen, a 6-foot-0 forward from Waupun, Wisconsin, played in a reserve role for the Hokies over the past two seasons. She is the third Virginia Tech player to enter the transfer portal and commit to a new school, following forward Carys Baker to Louisville and guard Mackenzie Nelson to Clemson.

Why it matters

Petersen's transfer is part of a larger exodus from the Virginia Tech women's basketball program, with five players in total entering the transfer portal this offseason. The Hokies will have a significantly revamped roster for the 2026-27 season as they look to build on their recent NCAA Tournament appearance.

The details

In her two seasons at Virginia Tech, Petersen averaged 4.2 points and 2.9 rebounds per game as a reserve. Her playing time decreased from 15.8 minutes per game as a freshman to just 10.6 minutes per game this past season. Petersen's best game was a 17-point, 11-rebound double-double against Towson in the season opener, but she struggled to find consistent playing time and production as the year went on.

  • Petersen entered the transfer portal in early April 2026.
  • She announced her commitment to Marquette on April 17, 2026.
