Microsoft has officially announced its next-generation Xbox console, codenamed 'Project Helix'. The new system will not only play past and future Xbox-exclusive titles, but also run every game built for PC. Asha Sharma, Microsoft's recently installed CEO of gaming, touted the console's industry-leading performance and the company's 'commitment to the return of Xbox'. Project Helix is expected to launch in 2027 and could cost around $1,000 based on leaks of the powerful AMD-made chip powering it.
Why it matters
This marks a significant shift for Xbox, moving beyond a traditional console experience to one that seamlessly integrates PC gaming. It signals Microsoft's ambition to lead in performance and provide a more unified platform for developers and players. The high price point, however, could be controversial and force Xbox to compete not just with Sony's PlayStation 6, but also Valve's Steam Machine hybrid PC-console.
The details
Project Helix will feature an AMD-made chip codenamed 'Magnus' that is estimated to deliver six times the performance and 20 times better ray-tracing capabilities compared to the current Xbox Series X. The chip is rumored to include 68 RDNA 5 compute units and three Zen 6 and eight Zen 6C CPU cores. Microsoft has two options for running PC games on the console - using compatibility layers or creating a version of Windows that facilitates both Xbox and PC titles.
