A new shaded pavilion will provide much-needed relief and a flexible outdoor learning space for students at Central Elementary.Lake Monticello TodayA new shaded pavilion is being constructed at Central Elementary in Fluvanna County, Virginia, thanks to a community-driven initiative led by the Fluvanna Leadership Development Program (FLDP). The project was sparked after a student became overheated during recess, highlighting the lack of shade on the first and second grade playground. The pavilion, designed to seat up to 36 students, will provide relief from the sun and a flexible outdoor learning space for the school.
Why it matters
The lack of shade on the Central Elementary playground posed a health and safety risk for the school's youngest students, who were forced to play in the blazing sun. This community-funded project addresses an important need and will improve student well-being, both physically and mentally, by giving them a comfortable space to rest, cool down, and learn outdoors.
The details
The 24-by-25-foot, 10-foot-tall pavilion was designed to accommodate a standard class size of 15-17 students, with enough room to host two classes while maintaining ADA-compliant spacing. The low-maintenance structure is expected to last over 20 years and can be installed in one to two days by the FLDP team. The $9,087 project was fully funded through community support, with Tenaska donating the full cost and Home Depot and Lowe's each contributing three picnic tables. Additional support came from Wahoo BBQ and Armstrong Landscaping, which each donated $300 toward a solar ceiling fan.
- The FLDP23 cohort made the pavilion construction their class initiative for the 2025-2026 program year.
- The Lake Monticello Community Foundation had previously explored building a pavilion at the lake and raised funds for it, which inspired the idea to redirect those resources to support students instead.

— Debra Hawrysko, FLDP23 cohort member
“We use it if we need to take a small break and are worn out and need water.”
— Student from Carysbrook Elementary
